“Laugh and the world laughs with you; snore and you sleep alone.” – Anthony Burgess

Snoring is extremely common.

From cartoons of old men snoring.. the log sawing analogy.. feeling that sharp pinch or shove in the middle of the night with a loud, frustrated cry of “ROLL OVER!”

Whether your partner’s snorts cause your bed to shake in the middle of the night, or your own heavy breathing startles you out of slumber, one thing is for sure - snoring is an irritating problem that most people accept as normal. Earplugs, anyone?

Considering that 45% of people snore from time to time, it’s more prevalent than one might realize. In fact, 25% of people are habitual snorers. Those desperate for relief (usually the partner suffering a lack of sleep because of it) seek out countless remedies:

-herbal anti-snoring pills
-tongue exercises
-those silly nose strips

    Sometimes remedies such as..

-raising the head of the bed
    -rolling over
    -lessening alcohol consumption
-and putting a humidifier in the bedroom
..will help, but they certainly won’t cure the problem.

Even though snoring is often laughed at or joked about, and often frustrates the snorer’s sleeping partner more than the snorer, it can hurt relationships. Poor or insufficient sleep can mess with our ability to:

    -think clearly
    -make decisions
    -manage conflict
-empathize with others (especially the faulty party)

While sleeping apart can reduce the impacts of snoring, it can also diminish intimacy and closeness.

Not only can snoring negatively impact relationships, but it can also be a signifier of an actual health problem: sleep apnea.

Left untreated, sleep apnea causes people to stop breathing repeatedly throughout their sleep, meaning the brain is likely not getting enough oxygen.

But what does this have to do with snoring?

Get this - 75% of snorers have obstructive sleep apnea, so masking symptoms with those crazy remedies mentioned above may actually be masking a much larger problem.

So how do I know if I'm just a snorer, or if I have sleep apnea?
