What is Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), commonly known as sleep apnea, means your breathing stops several times during sleep due to the collapse of tissues in your upper airway. This blockage stops your breathing and prevents air from getting to your lungs, which reduces the oxygen available to your body.

These pauses in your breathing are called "apneas", and they disrupt the sufferer, waking them sometimes hundreds of times each night. This is why sleep apnea sufferers describe themselves as "always tired" during the day.

Don't Put Yourself At Risk

Up to 90% of sleep apnea sufferers remain undiagnosed. Many believe their symptoms to be simply annoying, not a critical health issue. But leaving sleep apnea untreated can lead to serious health issues, some of which you or your partner may be experiencing already.

Sleep apnea is a chronic disease, which means it is a long-lasting condition that can be controlled but not cured, similar to diabetes. By receiving and sticking with treatment, you will be lowering your risk for health issues related to sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea Impacts the People Around You

Often, it is the bed partner who notices symptoms of sleep apnea first. These nights of loud snoring and restless lack of sleep can create relationship issues, performance challenges and increased health risks for sleep apnea sufferers and their partners. You may even be sleeping in a different room than your partner, desperate to get a good night's rest.

Driver Fatigue Can Be Fatal

And sleep issues don't just live in the bedroom. It is estimated that up to 20% of traffic fatalities in Canada are caused by fatigue. Many sleep apnea sufferers, some who have lived with their symptoms for years; have the most concerning symptom of all. Feeling so tired that you start falling asleep during the day - even nodding off while driving.
